There is lots to say about modern hip hop artists and their opulent lifestyle, but today's best hip hop rappers can learn a lesson or two from the first hip hop artist there was: Kool Herc. Born in Jamaica, Herc learned and practice the tradition of toasting ( spontaneous poetry and speech said over music ) which he later brought to The Bronx when he moved there at age thirteen. During the 1970's and through adapting this and other Jamaican traditions with his now urban life, Kool Herc built the foundations for what is known today as Hip hop culture, a culture that was born in the streets far away from the opulence some of today stars live for. By doing so Herc became the first of many Hip Hop artists.
On the 1980's Afrika Bambaataa defined the four pillars of Hip Hop culture, structuring hip hop even more. Some of the world top rappers started their careers in this time. Some have evolved with time keeping a fresh look, some sounded everywhere for a while and then disappeared.
During the 1990's Hip hop globalized originating adaptations of it's culture around Latin American and European countries. While around the world more artists and hip hop rappers were born every day, in the US the jamaican influence was never felt stronger than during this time. Some think this was due the increase of Jamaican immigrants to New York during the period. Though not Jamaican some of the artist that ruled the US whit their music we can mention Jay_Z and MC Hammer.
In the 2000's Hip Hop still very popular. Although according to it's principles Hip hop music should not be sell out to the pop charts, many artists and top rappers have become 'mainstream' selling millions of records. We can mention Eminem's Martial Matters, Nelly's Country Grammar and 50 cents' Get rich or dye trying, each of which sold over thousands of albums.
