Hip Hop/Rap/Gangsta Fashion
Back in the 80's, Djs were the only source of the hip-hop fashion. Their inspiration mainly came from the disco scene. When breaking became popular, break dancers would wear wide pants and suspenders, sneakers without shoelaces and wide, loose-fitting shirts in order to be comfortable.
In the 90's, large and oversized denim and cargo pants were in full vogue. The trend to let pants hang so low that the underwear shows is still going strong today. That gangsta fashion originated in prison, where they do not allow inmates to wear belts for security reasons. Shoe brands, such as Adidas and Converse were put on the map by this trend as well, along with baseball caps worn backwards.
Soon after, brand names such as Ralph Lauren and Hilfiger adopted the hip hop, gangsta fashion and exported it worldwide. Additionally, jewelry became symbolic of the hip hop, rap, gangsta lifestyle. With time, the gold chains turned into thick gold ropes encrusted with diamonds. Diamonds (also know as ice), gold and platinum were also used in dental grills and brass-knuckles, prompting the term “bling bling” because of all the sparkle in the scene.
Currently, gold, platinum and diamonds are still very popular in the industry. “Iced out” pendants, chains, belts and rings are worn by most major artists.
Crude poetry also became fashionable. Because of hip hop, it is now fashionable to sing about real life issues, where as before, that was a taboo. Hip hop, rap and gangsta song themes deal with violence, drugs and crime. There are songs about bank hold ups, sexuality, or single motherhood. Songs talk about the working man, divorce, beat dads, single moms, poor education, police brutality, and more.
Today, rappers come out with hit songs, such as 'Stay Up, Viagra.' where the ed medication is used to fend against a threatening oversexed woman. And we're all left wondering what they will come up with next.
